Salt Lake City Rehab Patients Make Holiday Meals for Homeless
Members of the Salvation Army’s addiction treatment program in Salt Lake City, Utah took time to give back to the community over the holidays. The Salt Lake Tribune reported that patients in the rehab program cooked 636 Thanksgiving meals that were delivered by more than 120 volunteers to elderly, home-bound people in the Salt Lake City area.
Giving back to others through charity and becoming involved in the community is a key element in many drug rehab centers. For roughly one dozen men going through the rehab program offered by the Salvation Army, this Thanksgiving was a chance to help others in need and keep busy during the sometimes painful holiday season.
"You can’t get the holidays back with your family," said Jared, one of the cooks.
According to drug rehabilitation kitchen manager Mike Black, the patients in rehab helped prepare more than 400 pounds of potatoes, 250 pounds of sweet potatoes, 70 pounds of stuffing and 100 pounds of green beans for elderly people in need – along as for their own rehab graduation party.
