Cosmetics and Beauty Enhancers: What Makes You Beautiful Can Also Kill You

Any woman flipping through a magazine will be easily dazed at models’ flawless skin, red lips, and tempting eyes. Ah…the wonders of makeup and cosmetics. Nobody is perfect after all, and almost every woman thanks the genius who invented lip gloss, foundation and mascara. But, if you enjoy putting on a made-up face every day before stepping out, read on. Could your beauty products be silently killing you?

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health reported that more than 900 chemicals in beauty products are actually detrimental to your skin and overall health. Let’s go over the most attractive products people go for, and why it’s worth thinking twice before using these.

Circle lenses and colored contact lenses – they make your eyes look exotic and larger, and the best part is, you can experiment with some many eye colors. Sadly, your beauty sales person may not warn you against the lax use of decorative contact lenses. If you’re not careful about hand hygiene when putting them on or taking them off, you may get the pink eye, or conjunctivitis. Prolonged use could cause ulcers and abrasion in the outermost layer of the eyes, making one more susceptible to infections, allergies and blindness.

Let’s talk about skin enhancers, the most popular being foundation. Liquid foundations work by creating a flawless, porcelain skin surface on the face. Unfortunately, a lot of these foundations have mineral oil, which is a known carcinogen, and a substance which clogs pores and prevents the skin from breathing and detoxifying. Prolonged usage of foundation has also been found to impede cell regeneration on the face.

Lipsticks, nail polish and hair color are some of the other beauty enhancing products you should be wary about, because they have been studied and found to contain certain carcinogens, or cancer-causing substances.
