Foods that lower cholesterol
Many of us have elevated cholesterol levels and have medication prescribed to lower the levels especially LDL, but medication means that we are risking other health complications such as liver damage. Selecting a diet rich in cholesterol reducing foods mentioned below will keep the levels under control.
Oats
Having a cup of oats for breakfast daily will significantly reduce LDL levels by as much as 6% in six weeks. A substance in oats called beta glucan absorbs the LDL which will be excreted from the body.
Garlic
Regular use of garlic will lower cholesterol as well as stopping particles of it from sticking to artery walls, preventing plaque buildup.
Avocados
The monounsaturated fats and the beta sitosterol raises the HDL while lowering LDL and reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the body but should be consumed in moderation because of the high calories and fat content.
Olive oil
The high content of heart friendly monounsaturated fatty acids will lower cholesterol. Use it in your cooking and as a salad dressing.
Salmon and other fatty fish
The Omega 3 fatty acids lower cholesterol while increasing HDL in addition to all the other health benefits. Fish such as salmon, sardines and herring are high in omega 3 fatty acids.
