Are you interested in acupuncture and oriental medicine? Acupuncture, the practice of treating pain or disease by placing needles at specific points on the skin, has been around for thousands of years. However, this treatment method is still prevalent today as one of the most popular types of alternative medicines. If you would like to make a living by treating people with acupuncture, then you might want to consider earning a master’s degree in the field. Here’s a brief look at the Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program offered at American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).
The Program
Located in Houston, TX, the Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program offered at ACAOM is a four-year program that teaches Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as well as Western Medicine. Students who learn TCM taught through the program will know 300 herbal medicines and over 360 acupuncture points. Although a four-year degree, the program includes 2 years of clinical experience.
Students will also learn Western medical science, including disease symptoms, Western diagnostic methods, and physical examination techniques. The school also offers other healthcare administration programs including the Master of Integrative Wellness Management.
Eligibility
If you have a bachelor’s degree, you might be eligible to enter the program. In order to qualify to enter the program, students must meet three specific conditions: 1) Students must have a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a minimum of 30 hours of general education from an accredited university; 2) Students must also have a grade point average of 2.5, or 3.0 on the last 60 semester hours; and 3) Student must have completed six semester hours from two of the three courses: Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry.
Application Process
To apply for this herbal medicine degree, prospective students must complete and submit an admissions application form, provide two of the same photographs, and write a personal statement about why you want to practice this type of medicine.
