Novartis reshapes research, closes some Swiss, Chinese units

By John Miller ZURICH (Reuters) – Novartis is closing some of its research operations in Switzerland and China and cutting 175 jobs, part of the Swiss drug maker's effort to centralize control over its drug discovery programs and contain costs. Novartis, which employs 120,000 globally, is also relocating its tropical disease research arm from Singapore to California. The Basel-based company is consolidating research oversight within its Swiss headquarters and the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) near Boston, now headed by Jay Bradner.

Woman pleads guilty to lying to get Boston Marathon benefits

The woman, Joanna Leigh, 41, of Jamaica Plain, was sentenced in Boston's Suffolk County Superior Court to a year in prison, suspended for a three-year probationary period, District Attorney Daniel Conley said in a statement on Friday. Dzokhar Tsarnaev, 22, has been sentenced to death for the bombings he carried out with his brother, who died after a shootout with police.

Sanofi’s Genzyme pays $32.59 million in criminal Seprafilm case

The biotechnology unit of French drug company Sanofi SA was accused of two misdemeanor counts of violating the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act from 2005 to 2010 by allowing Seprafilm to be adulterated and misbranded while being sold. Sanofi bought Genzyme in 2011. Seprafilm is a clear film used to reduce abnormal internal scarring that can cause organs and tissues to stick together following pelvic and abdominal surgeries known as laparotomies.
